Runner’s High?
We have all heard that expression as it relates to the release of endorphins during excercise. I would say that I experience clarity when I run, and a torrential flow of creativity (well, sometimes the flow is more like a trickle, but I’ll take what I can get). Maybe that is the same concept as “the high”. I guess if the thoughts appear stupid or embarassing in retrospect, that could qualify as a high of sorts. Most of my musings, however, hold up pretty well into the future (at least in my mind).
So today I was thinking about “destiny”. People ask me what I’m going to do with a masters degree in liberal arts. I have no ready answer. I am hoping it will come to me as I progress. But here’s a thought: what if there is no capital d, Destiny? What if there are just a bunch of little, quiet, destinies along the way to wherever? I think the thing I learned in my last class was that there are no Big Changes, only piecemeal changes.
There may be no significant career transition, or any such marker for me when I graduate. The alteration process may be so gradual and unexpected that I wind up in a different place without ever realizing that I have switched locations. We shall see…

Yeah I don’t know - I believe everything happens for a reason though and that sometimes we can control our desitny by the things we do with our lives but, that’s more of a mission you’re on I think. I believe more or less that there’s something out there; a higher power that predetermines our life and where it’s going to lead. We’re just small pegs in this universe waiting to be placed where we’re meant to be. I think you’re right that sometimes, the process is so gradual that all of a sudden you find yourself in a totally different place without even realizing the change but sometimes the change can be so drastic and smack dab right in front of you too.
I wouldn’t put too much pressure on yourself on “what you’re going to do with your Masters degree” you’ll figure it out eventually - or rather, someone will figure it out for you. Either way, I know you’ll be happy with who you are and what you become out of all this.
Again, I will leave you with a couple quotes (sorry, I love quotes!!)
“Dreams are like stars…you may never touch them, but if you follow them they will lead you to your destiny.”
“We are not permitted to choose the frame of our destiny. But what we put into it is ours.”
